If you didn't get it from Jessie... [Jun. 30th, 2006|10:12 am]
Hi,

Everyone expected House Republicans to give up efforts to kill NPR and PBS after a massive public outcry stopped them last year. But they've just voted to eliminate funding for NPR and PBS—unbelievably, starting with programs like "Sesame Street."

Public broadcasting would lose nearly a quarter of its federal funding this year. Even worse, all funding would be eliminated in two years--threatening one of the last remaining sources of watchdog journalism.

Sign the petition telling Congress to save NPR and PBS again this year:

http://civic.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/

Last year, millions of us took action to save NPR and PBS, and Congress listened. We can do it again if enough of us sign the petition in time.

This would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting. The Boston Globe reports the cuts "could force the elimination of some popular PBS and NPR programs." NPR's president expects rural public radio stations may be forced to shut down.

The House and Senate are deciding if public broadcasting will survive, and they need to hear from viewers like you. Sign the petition at:

http://civic.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/

Thanks!

P.S. Read the Boston Globe story on the threat to NPR and PBS at:

Read it. Make sense of it. [Jun. 29th, 2006|08:52 pm]
A collection of troubles is what it seems to be. It must be really, really hard to be Mr. Dylan. Without futher ado, Bob Dylan I present Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Free, No. 10."

I'm just average, common too
I'm just like him, the same as you
I'm everybody's brother and son
I ain't different from anyone
It ain't no use a-talking to me
It's just the same as talking to you.

I was shadow-boxing earlier in the day
I figured I was ready for Cassius Clay
I said "Fee, fie, fo, fum, Cassius Clay, here I come
26, 27, 28, 29, I'm gonna make your face look just like mine
Five, four, three, two, one, Cassius Clay you'd better run
99, 100, 101, 102, your ma won't even recognize you
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, gonna knock him clean right out of his spleen."

Well, I don't know, but I've been told
The streets in heaven are lined with gold
I ask you how things could get much worse
If the Russians happen to get up there first.
Wowee! Pretty scary!

Now, I'm liberal, but to a degree
I want ev'rybody to be free
But if you think that I'll let Barry Goldwater
Move in next door and marry my daughter
You must think I'm crazy!
I wouldn't let him do it for all the farms in Cuba.

Well, I set my monkey on the log
And ordered him to do the Dog
He wagged his tail and shook his head
And he went and did the Cat instead
He's a weird monkey, very funky.

I sat with my high-heeled sneakers on
Waiting to play tennis in the noonday sun
I had my white shorts rolled up past my waist
And my wig-hat was falling in my face
But they wouldn't let me on the tennis court.

I gotta woman, she's so mean
She sticks my boots in the washing machine
Sticks me with buckshot when I'm nude
Puts bubblegum in my food
She's funny, wants my money, calls me "honey."

Now I gotta friend who spends his life
Stabbing my picture with a bowie-knife
Dreams of strangling me with a scarf
When my name comes up he pretends to barf.
I've got a million friends!

Now they asked me to read a poem
At the sorority sister's home
I got knocked down and my head was swimmin'
I wound up with the Dean of Women
Yippee! I'm a poet, and I know it.
Hope I don't blow it.

I'm gonna grow my hair down to my feet so strange
So I look like a walking mountain range
And I'm gonna ride into Omaha on a horse
Out to the country club and the golf course.
Carry the New York Times, shoot a few holes, blow their minds.

Now you're probably wondering by now
Just what this song is all about
What's probably got you baffled more
Is what this thing here is for.
It's nothing
It's something I learned over in England.

[music |Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere]

When I first heard The Arcade Fire I said: Hey these guys kind of remind me of the Talking Heads. Most people I talked to, especially at Rancho, disputed this. I just found out that The Arcade Fire covers a Talking Heads song, so they must bear some influence, no?

Anyway, I thought things were looking extremely bleak for me as far as the future was concerned until I took a step back and evaluated my situation. By working an extra day at work, and using most of my down time from school to be my parents servant, I will be able to work myself almost (if not completely) out of all debt by the end of the Summer. I'm still in a position where if I take school fairly seriously I can transfer to a real university by June. Things aren't great but I can make them better.

On the downside of the whole thing, I don't have any money for the Summer. So once again it is a Summer wasted. I've a few friends who are planning quite grand excursions for this one, and it makes me sad to think that I am wasting my life as a result of bad choices that mostly, if not all, stem from my drinking. Is their any good that comes out of such extravagant amounts of money and time squandered? Well, maybe. If I learn anything, then yes.

Okay, here it goes... [Jun. 26th, 2006|08:53 am]
I think I am going to give the whole quitting cigarettes a try again. It's been twenty-four hours you sons-of-bitches. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I also need to stop drinking so much... if that goes down remains to be seen. At least I'm down to only weekends.
